Doing Business

Newtown Precinct Business Association

We are the Newtown Precinct Business Association (NPBA); and ‘WE’ are YOU. This 21st century 'chamber of commerce' represents small business people who are seriously concerned about operating a successful business, and working together to ensure we create the right environment in which to operate a business.

Despite the challenges of the current economic climate, and the impact of online shopping, Newtown Precinct is alive and well with distinctive physical experiences, resources, attractions and heritage that makes it unique in Australia, and some would insist, the world. Importantly, we are truly Sydney’s ‘Inner West End’ with all that implies and as such we are the envy of most urban precincts.

Newtown Precinct is not limited to the mainstreet of King Street; there’s Erskineville and Enmore as well. The fine-grain, creative communities and green spaces in between give the precinct a unique character. For over 150 years the precinct’s spirit of acceptance and tolerance has produced a unique cultural enclave with a creative and diverse street life which has become the heartland of Sydney’s vibrant bohemian culture. It is an eclectic mix of alternative cultures, ethnicity, sexuality and lifestyles; punks, poets and artists, alongside families, young professionals and its early post war European immigrants.

This it the primary reason that it is called ‘Newtown Precinct’, not just Newtown, or just King Street.

With over 100 members and funding from both Marrickville Council and the City of Sydney; we are not without substance or support.

We are working together to create opportunities for business to flourish within a sustainable local economy.

Our charter is to:

  • Provide a strong and unified voice for buisness
  • Support the viability and skills base of local businesses
  • Market the unique difference of the Newtown Precinct
