City of Sydney

Your City of Villages

A vibrant, cosmopolitan, and accessible city with a diverse population

Covering an area of 26 square kilometres, the city is home to 177,000 residents and takes in the commercial, financial and cultural hub of greater Sydney. Sydney is also a city of villages, and each radiates its own unique essence.

Newtown is one our most colourful and alternative villages, boasting inner-city attractions from restaurants and bars to theatres and clubs. Specialist shops include vintage fashion and music stores, bookshops, antique and op-shops, hairdressing salons and homewares stores.

Responsibility for the governance of Newtown is shared by the City of Sydney and Marrickville Council. The City of Sydney proudly supports its small business community.
