Minister Confirms No Clearway Extensions on King St

In response to recent media hype, the NPBA has recently sought to re-confirm the state governments existing position on King Street clearways by meeting with Melinda Pavey, NSW Roads, Maritime and Freight Minister and our Federal member for Grayndler Anthony Albanese MP.

The Minister has confirmed in our discussion and in a recently released statement that

‘..there will be no extension of clearways on King Street Newtown.’

‘Mrs Pavey said it was important for local businesses that on street parking along King Street be maintained, as there was limited parking away from King Street.’ a spokesperson for the Ministers office said.

The Minister, a previous small business owner herself, indicated her understanding of the pressures that clearways on King St would place on pedestrian safety, visitation to Newtown and ultimately the cash registers of local businesses.

The NPBA would like to thank Anthony Albanese MP for organising this meeting which led to a positive result for local business. Without his involvement this meeting may not have taken place.

This confirmation will provide some security for the multitude of members and local businesses who have recently been inquiring about the effect weekend clearways might have on visitor numbers to Newtown.

The NPBA will continue to monitor potential impacts to the way our locals do business and ensure we have the best representation available to protect the long term sustainability of our weird, safe and vibrant precinct.
