The Edge was acquired by Newtown Theatre Company in mid 2002. Having previously been a dance space, and the home of Kinetic Energy Dance Theatre since 1983, The Edge has undergone a cosmetic facelift and acquired a new vision to support the development of innovative Australian theatre, music and dance.
Rather than taking a traditional approach of being a venue for hire, or calling for submissions throughout the wider theatrical community, Edge will invite a limited group of practitioners to present regular seasons of work, and treat the venue as a home base.
This will enable a continuity of presence that small companies can generally not afford and also give wonderful opportunities for cross promotion and audience development.
Although the principle interest of The Edge is in independent theatre both music and dance will also be included in the programming.
