Newtown is at the centre of Sydney’s love affair with everything vintage and all things retro – recalibrate your life.
Newtown’s vintage clothing and retro furniture scene began when vintage was still called second hand. King Street was bursting with recycled clothing and furniture stores – and it’s still available. Now North and South King Street and Enmore Road also has high end vintage clothing and collector furniture pieces. Newtown manages to be seamlessly vintage while still being edgy.
A good place to start your vintage journey is to head down to South King Street. Mulberry Street is one vintage clothing store at this end of the Newtown shopping precinct not to be missed (also on Enmore Road). They import exquisite vintage pieces from France, Italy and Germany and sell reproduction retro dresses. They also sell second-hand high-end designer clothes. The inspiring Red Cross store at Three 5 Nine King Street has a huge range of vintage and retro clothing ranging from jeans to fur coats. Their window displays are guaranteed to lure you in. Retro Spec’d Clothing specialise in reproduction 40’s and 50’s clothing for both men and women. Envision 54 is everything a retro lover could wish for. They specialise in designer furniture from the 1950s, 60’s and 70’s. This includes pieces designed by Paul Kafka and Douglas Snelling and popular brands such as Parker, Artemide and Iittala. In Newtown you will find that kettle you used to covet at your Nan’s place and maybe even a lava lamp or two.
