The Performing Arts are an essential part of the experience of Newtown and at the heart of the culture of this creative Precinct. North and South King Street, Enmore and Erskineville Roads and the four creative quarters have spaces for performers to showcase talent in its many forms.
The Precinct is proudly home to the highest concentration of independent theatres, live performance spaces, galleries and creative industry outside the CBD. This collaborative community has maintained its bohemian edge for over 150 years, a breeding ground for arts and cuture ensuring their place in the Newtown Precinct storyline.
At the high end, the spectacular Carriageworks, the University of Sydney’s Seymour Centre and the historic Enmore Theatre play a leading role in the performing arts scene in Sydney. All present diverse and innovative programmes that bring outstanding local and international culture to the Precinct.
The New Theatre embodies the spirit of Newtown. Down on South King Street this unique theatre prides itself on doing things their way. As a community-based performing arts space it is right at home in the Precinct; as they say – always real, always raw and always new.
PACT Theatre is in the village of Erskineville. They are very much part of the community, supporting and producing emerging artists as they entertain, challenge and engage.
King Street Theatre gives theatre goers a feast of enriching productions and aims to nurture all artists in a totally revamped space featuring live entertainment and performances that mirror King Street Theatre’s unique approach to performing arts.
