Take a walk down King Street and you get an immediate sense of the carnival, the outrageous, the bohemian; it’s life lived to the full. Markets, performances, festivals, record launches, exhibitions, openings, meetings and events are all part of the lifestyle of this quirky urban community.
Our bohemian, vibrant atmosphere makes us the perfect host for some of Sydney’s best-loved festivals. Perhaps the most dynamic, the Sydney Fringe Festival, is a huge celebration of the performing arts and is the state’s largest alternative arts event – right at home in the creative hub of Newtown Precinct.
The Newtown Festival IS Newtown. A heaving, colourful, diverse community event that is all about fun, engaging and igniting the senses – a huge celebration of the extended Newtown community.
And Short and Sweet? It’s the Biggest Little Play Festival in the World, and it started here in Newtown Precinct and has spread across the globe. Watch this space for the next season of extraordinary 10 minute plays, musicals, dances, burlesque and cabaret!
Newtown’s irreverence racks up a notch when The Comedy Festival rolls out. Always a huge laugh this Festival plays at performance spaces throughout the entertainment precinct.
But what about every day? Saturdays are always big in the Precinct with the Eveleigh Farmers Markets down at the industrial spaces at Carriageworks, and the Finders Keepers artisan market bringing together independent designers, artists and makers. Newtown Square hosts a regular weekend market where you fill find artisan baked breads, vintage clothing, bric-a-brac… and pretty much anything else you might be after.
Newtown itself is an event. People come to hear stories, dance, laugh, and fire up their senses – that’s the way the locals like it, that’s Newtown style.
